There are currently two English-language DVDs that available of The 'Burbs. The first release is the Region 1 disc, sold in North America and Canada. This is distinguished by having a purple/blue colour scheme similar to the original movie poster. Another release was produced for Region 2 and 4 (UK and Australia) and this is titled "The 'Burbs Uncut" and has a yellow colour scheme. Despite the "Uncut" in the title, this release is no different (in terms of content) to the original Region 1 release. The uncut refers to the version shown on UK TV, which originally was cut (albeit very slightly), although in more recent years has been shown in its entirety. Generally, the Region 2 DVD has a better quality transfer - the colour balance is better, and as it's PAL, the resolution is higher (720x576 versus 720x480 for NTSC). However, the Region 1 DVD does have an alternative ending which doesn't appear on Region 2. Both discs have the original cinematic trailer. The Region 2 DVD will run slightly shorter than Region 1. This is not due to anything being cut from the movie, but is from the way that 24FPS film is converted to 25FPS PAL. It is easier to speed the film up by 1 frame per second, whereas for NTSC, it can be presented at its original speed. The differences are so small you are unlikely to notice it. In addition to the English discs, there are localised releases for example Latin America and Europe (various languages). The transfers are the same as the respective PAL/NTSC English releases but they contain additional audio and subtitle languages. You don't gain much from buying them, other than the knowledge that you're a true hard-core Burbs fan! :) |
